Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe for Educators and Learners?

What is your school's strategy for AI?

Written by Joel Gordon

Regardless of whether you are about to commence developing your strategy in earnest or are looking for ideas on how to refine and evolve your current approach, now is a crucial opportunity to pause and reflect. This short think piece frames a human scale AI experience using each of the Human Scale Education current foci for development as a starting point. Each bullet point contains a proposal for where AI could contribute to supporting people and specific proposals on how Human Scale Education can help you progress this now.

Identity - how can schools help every student navigate the challenges of feeling valued and respected in a world that too often feels like individuals don't matter unless they are rich, beautiful, and popular? AI has the potential to make it possible to create and deliver personalised learning to all students. At Human Scale Education we believe that creative integration of AI, critical thinking, and ethics into the curriculum is a key starting point.

Creating opportunities for students to collaborate and share contrasting views and experiences via guest speakers, workshops, and debates with students from other schools are all areas we can help support.

Environment - AI is a resource intensive technology. Consider creating space for students and staff to learn about how technology advancements, policy measures, and responsible practice can help mitigate these via PSHCE and form time activities.

Teacher training - what support will teachers need to learn how to use AI effectively? Equipping teachers with the skills to confidently assess their own AI competency is a good starting point. Identifying the people from within your organisation who can help the rest of your team can be a scalable and cost- effective way of supporting ongoing development. Speak to us to get expert advice on how you can make a start today.

Leadership and Management - what assumptions are other school leaders are making about AI? How are leaders in different kinds of education providers from mainstream, such as SEMH, AP, FE, secure settings, home schooling and self-directed learning communities, approaching the challenge? Instead of working in silos and missing out on innovative practice, we invite you to participate in an interdisciplinary approach that brings together professionals from a diverse range of providers.

Parents/carers - what concerns do parents and carers have? How are they using AI to help support their children's learning now? What can you do to help empower parents and carers who want to build their skills?

Human Scale Education are happy to share our experience and support your community.

Political - what opportunities does the new political landscape hold? How can schools and their communities influence policy? We believe that effective policy is a necessary, but not sufficient, part of enabling AI benefits and mitigating risk. Simply put, this means that policy is unable to make change happen by itself (this always relies on people), but that ineffective policy can actively hinder progress. We believe that good policy should be informed by education professionals providing insight to what is working and what is failing.

Speak to us for advice on how to contribute to your perspective and help drive policy change that will enable your school and community make the most of AI.

At Human Scale Education we believe that there is huge potential for AI to help support teachers and students to experience the benefits of putting relationships at the heart of their learning. There are also serious risks that, without insightful planning and skilful implementation, could mean that AI ends up adding to inequality.
